Let me just preface this post with a warning – it is a bit of rant…
Remember the change I blogged about last week? About three weeks ago my husband’s employer announced that they are considering moving his department to a new building about 26 miles south of where they are located now. On top of that there are no public transportation routes to the new location yet – the train is scheduled to run near the new location by 2010.
Funny thing happens when the tripling your daily commute miles becomes a possibility… you start thinking about options: selling your home and moving closer to the new location, trying to find a way to stomach the commute, or actually discussing other job opportunities that will allow you to keep the same commute you have now with a few of the recruiters that call weekly to try and recruit you…any way you look at it – it all equals change…
For those of you who already have a roughly 40 mile commute and think we are crazy to be thinking of above said options let me explain… Three years ago we spent a lot of money selling our home and relocating to Utah from Arizona to trade a 40 mile (translated – extra 1.5-2 hours daily) commute for our current 13 mile commute so that we could have more family time…ouch!
To top it off my husband works for a rather large employer and change takes time – in fact we probably won’t know exactly what is going to happen for about three weeks – and it is the not knowing that drives me crazy! That is where I lack the skills – I am not so good at waiting and wondering…
So I dig in and get busy with projects – organizing, painting, getting things ready so whatever way it goes we are ready…something about staying busy that helps the waiting time to pass. In the past week I painted two bedrooms, tiled a closet floor, organized closets and drawers, and more. This weekend we moved on to remodeling the laundry room 1/2 bath on the main floor – a project we were gung-ho to finish when we bought this home three years ago…but somehow lost the steam to finish – until now.
So the good news is whatever comes of this change we will be ready – and if I get to stay exactly where I am – which is my hope honestly – than all my home improvement projects will be done – and that is a great feeling!
And one last thing I need to mention – I absolutely, totally, positively hate GRAY trim!! Three coats of paint and back breaking labor to get it white – yuck. Also NEVER use silicone caulk on woodwork and borders of counters & walls that might someday be painted – the new homeowners will be cursing your name with every breath as they work to fix your faux pas – I promise…been there done that way too much this weekend!
Ok now that it is all off my chest I feel better. I will have some pretty "after" photos later this week – I promise…
Until then I am back to painting and cleaning and organizing – whatever makes the time pass by and keeps me productive I am totally in…

We have never lived where we have much of a commute so I always think people are crazy to drive so far! lol 40 minutes would make me crazy (well umm crazier than I already am)!!
When I have to drive in Portland traffic (Portland is the largest city in Oregon and small compared to most) It makes me want to scream, I can see where road rage happens! lol
Bottom line is doing what works for you, it will be interesting to see what you guys decide
and easy for me since I don’t have to! (aren’t I just a brat tonight)!
